-
- SIMPLE SEARCHES
- To search for a word or a phrase, click
- the mouse with the pointer over the
- upper "Search for" icon, and enter
- text from the keyboard. Click on the
- 'OK' icon, or press Return twice to
- perform the search.
-
- To enter a second search string, use
- the up/down arrow keys to move between
- the two strings. Additionally, pressing
- Return while on the upper string will
- take you to the lower. Use Ctrl-U to
- clear a search string.
-
- WILDCARDS
- The # wildcard will match any single
- character. Thus FIL# will match FILE
- and FILL but not FILLED.
-
- The * wildcard will match any number of
- characters (including zero). Thus FIL*
- will match FIL, FILE, FILL, FILLED,
- FILING, FILTERING etc.
-
- It is often useful to add this wildcard
- at the end of words, so as to match both
- a singular and plural entry.
-
- Use DISC* to find DISC and DISCS, but
- note that this will also match DISCOURSE,
- DISCOUNT etc.
-
- Note that to search for the hash (#) or
- asterisk (*) characters themselves you
- use /# or /*. Thus /*FX will search for
- *FX rather than <wildcard>FX. The string
- /#/## will match all three character
- strings whose first two characters are
- hashes.
-
- SEARCH LOGIC
- Use the mouse to select OR, AND or NOT
- logic. Note that if only one search
- string is supplied in the upper input
- slot, the logic state is irrelevant. In
- all other cases (including those where
- the upper input is empty) the logic
- state is important.
-
- The new NOT option can be useful at
- times. For example, if you search for:
- Pipedream
- NOT
- News
- you will turn up all the references to
- Pipedream which are not News items.
-
- All searches are case insensitive. Thus
- there is no difference between Mouse,
- mouse or MOUSE.
-
- KEYWORDS
- In the RISC User database, we have
- adhered to a number of conventions to
- assist in the entry of search strings.
-
- Article sub-groupings:
- News, Review, Hint, Assembler (or ARM)
- Visuals, Program, Tutorial, Graphics.
- Use AND logic with any of these keywords
- to find a required item.
-
- Commonly used Keywords:
- Wordprocessor, Database, Filename, Disc,
- Desktop, ARM, Comms, OS, RISC OS, 3D,
- SYS, SWI, OS_Word, Real-Time.
-
- VDU and Star Commands
- All star command names are preceded by
- an asterisk, and both VDU and star
- commands contain no spaces, eg.:
- *CONFIGURE *VOICES *FX3 *FX3,4 VDU23.
- For example, to search for *CONFIGURE
- use:
- /*Configure (or just /*Config*)
-
- Hyphens may be used, as in Ctrl-L
-
- Although the slash character (/) is used
- in the database it acts just as a normal
- terminator (eg. a space). It can be
- entered from the keyboard by typing
- // (to avoid confusion with /* etc.).
-
- HARDCOPY
- After a successful search, click Menu
- over the icon on the icon bar, and click
- on 'Print'. This will initiate a text
- printout of all the finds on display.
- Note that the 'Print' option is made
- non-selectable when there are no valid
- items to print.
-
- ArcScan will make use of the RISC User
- Printer Buffer if it is active.
-
- The menu option Printer LF should be
- selected if your printer does not
- appear to be performing linefeeds.
-
- STARTUP SETTINGS
- It is possible to customise the
- database which ArcScan loads up when it
- is first installed, or when it is rein-
- stated after a Clear. To do this, move
- the pointer across the Set startup entry
- on the icon bar menu. If you click on
- Current file, then the currently loaded
- database will be set up as the default.
- Alternatively, click on Null, and
- ArcScan will start up each time with no
- database in memory.
-
- FILE UPDATING
- Magazine databases, such as those for
- RISC User and BEEBUG, can be updated on
- an issue by issue basis. This is not
- possible for Manuals held by ArcScan.
-
- To update an ArcScan magazine database,
- drag one or more issue files of the
- appropriate magazine from a directory
- viewer to the ArcScan icon on the icon
- bar. They will be loaded and appended to
- the database in memory.
-
- To save the updated database back to
- disc, select the 'Save' option from the
- icon bar menu. This will save back a
- volume file for the latest volume. This
- does not have to be a completed volume.
-
- If you are dragging a number of files
- individually to the icon, it is
- important to keep strictly to issue
- order, though if you are dragging a
- group of files together the order is
- automatically maintained.
-
- If you intend to save back the updated
- data to disc or Econet, do not drag
- files from different volumes at the
- same time, and remember to select the
- 'Save' option from the menu after each
- volume is completed.
-
- Update files are identified by their
- filename, which carries information
- about volume and issue number - eg
- RUIv02i10 holds volume 2 issue 10
- of RISC User, while BBIv07i08 is
- BEEBUG volume 7 issue 8.
-
- Note that neither issue nor volume
- files need form an uninterrupted
- sequence.
-
- QUIT, CLOSE AND CLEAR
- The Quit option on the icon bar icon
- terminates the ArcScan package, as
- you would expect. Close simply closes
- ArcScan's two windows, leaving the
- application, and all resident data
- intact. The additional option Clear
- clears datafiles from memory and
- returns unused memory to the Wimp.
- ArcScan's two windows are then closed,
- but the application is left in place
- with its icon on the icon bar ready for
- further use.
